Since 2010, more than 90 real estate properties throughout St. Petersburg have been transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church. The publication “Business Petersburg” writes about this.
The media notes that believers are consistently taking away buildings around the Alexander Nevsky Lavra. Among other things, the Russian Orthodox Church recently submitted an application to transfer to it the building of the City Psychiatric Hospital on the embankment of the Obvodny Canal, on Monastyrsky Island, where the Alexander Nevsky Lavra is located, in which the relics of Alexander Yaroslavich are kept.
In addition, in August of this year, the church was able to achieve the return of the Annunciation Tomb, which was previously under the jurisdiction of the Museum of Urban Sculpture. Also, the parish of the Holy Cross Cathedral on Ligovsky Prospekt was given ownership of three premises in a house on Chernyakhovsky Street – the church shares this house with the Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Administration. Even this year, the Russian Orthodox Church’s application to transfer the St. Michael’s Chapel in the courtyard of a house on Rasstannaya Street was approved. And the Evangelical Lutheran community of St. Catherine agreed to transfer the basement in the historical building of the Pastor’s House on the 1st line of V.O., 1, lit. B, for free use for 100 years.
In addition, the grain barns on the embankment of the Obvodny Canal were also returned to the Russian Orthodox Church, which it intended to adapt as a pilgrimage center.
The Russian Orthodox Church also wanted, but has not yet received St. Isaac’s Cathedral at its full disposal.
According to media reports, every year the church receives a number of objects from the city. In total, since 2010, religious organizations in St. Petersburg have been transferred for free use or ownership of 121 objects, including 90 real estate objects have been transferred to organizations of the Moscow Patriarchate: 29 of them for free use, 61 for ownership.
