High-ranking officers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine died during an award ceremony in the Ukrainian-controlled part of the Zaporozhye region after a missile strike, RBC reports, citing a report by The Washington Post.
According to the publication, soldiers of the 128th mountain assault brigade of Ukraine gathered for an award ceremony near the front line on the morning of November 3. As WP notes, the ceremony was aimed at “maintaining morale among the soldiers.”
During the award ceremony, a missile strike was launched at the place where the military had gathered. At least 19 troops attending the event were killed, including several high-ranking officers and some of the brigade’s “best warriors,” the newspaper reported. Dozens of others were injured.
As WP notes, such ceremonies are usually attended by about 30 people and take place in a well-protected bunker. However, Friday’s ceremony, according to the newspaper, took place in an open area and was attended by about 100 people.
“Everyone is angry at the command,” said one brigade member WP spoke with. “They could have given the order to move everything to another place or to some shelter. Why this didn’t happen, I don’t know. This is the stupidity of the military leadership,” he noted.
After the missile strike, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov admitted that there were deaths among the soldiers of the 128th mountain assault brigade “Transcarpathia” of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, but did not specify their number.
