Russia terminates nuclear weapons agreement with Japan

The Russian government is terminating the agreement with the Japanese government on cooperation in order to eliminate nuclear weapons subject to reduction in the Russian Federation. The order was signed by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, the document was published on the legal information portal.

“To terminate the agreement between the government of the Russian Federation and the government of Japan on cooperation to assist in the elimination of nuclear weapons subject to reduction in the Russian Federation and the creation of a Cooperation Committee for these purposes, signed in Tokyo on October 13, 1993,” the order says.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has been instructed to notify the Japanese side of the decision, TASS reports.

The purpose of the agreement was to facilitate the safe elimination of nuclear weapons, which Moscow was required to reduce in accordance with bilateral or multilateral treaties, as well as its unilateral decisions. For this purpose, a special committee was created – within the framework of it, Moscow and Tokyo determined priority areas for such interaction, exchanged information and research results, and developed specific cooperation programs.
