Chestnuts are edible – they can and even be healthy to eat. Gastroenterologist Ekaterina Kashukh spoke about this, the Izvestia newspaper writes.
The doctor explained that chestnut puree, fried or baked chestnuts are a natural source of B vitamins, PP. Nuts contain a lot of fiber and useful microelements – potassium, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, zinc. They help improve immunity, have a positive effect on the cardiovascular system, maintain bone strength, and normalize digestion. They are also low-calorie – only 170 kcal per 100 g of product.
However, you can eat edible chestnut fruits, but not horse chestnuts, which contain too many tannins. According to the specialist, when choosing chestnuts, you should first check the shell – there should be no stains, cracks or other visual defects on it.
Kashuh advised putting the chestnuts in the refrigerator after purchasing: at a temperature of +2 to +5 degrees they can be stored for several months.
At the same time, people with peanut allergies should not eat chestnuts, as a cross-allergic reaction may develop. Also, chestnuts should not be given to children, as this is too heavy food for a child’s fragile stomach. Eating them is also not recommended for those who have problems with blood clotting, diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, kidneys and liver.
