Poll: Russians spend most of their salaries on food

The Russians piled on the two biggest expenses for the month. The survey was conducted by the research service of the largest online recruiting platform in Russia, hh.ru.

It turned out that most of Russians’ salaries are spent on food and rent or mortgage. This was stated by 47% of all respondents. At the same time, food was named as a key expense item by 57% of residents of the Khabarovsk Territory, 54% each of the Yaroslavl and Novosibirsk regions. The least number of such respondents is in the Udmurt Republic (22%).

Also, 34% of Russians named housing rent and/or mortgage among the biggest expenses. Residents of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug (44%) spend the most on this, while residents of the Saratov region spend the least amount of money on this (20%). At the same time, the cost of renting a home or mortgage predominates among young job seekers: 45% of respondents aged 18 to 24 years and 44% of respondents 25–34 years old named this point as key.

Another 30% of Russians said that they spend a significant part of their salary on utility costs, loan repayments (33%), on children (15%), on transport and/or cars (11%), on treatment (8%), on clothes and shoes (6%). The least likely to be the largest expense items included education (5%) and personal care (4%).

The survey was conducted among 5,043 employed Russian job seekers from October 16 to October 30, 2023.
