NYT: The White House fears that ATACMS will not help Ukraine

The White House fears that ATACMS operational-tactical missiles transferred to Kyiv will not be able to change the course of the conflict in Ukraine, writes The New York Times, citing aides to US President Joe Biden.

Prior to this, Biden had long refused to provide this complex because he feared that its use could cross the “Russian red line,” the publication notes.

“Still, the USA gave [президенту Украины Владимиру] Zelensky all the weapons systems he requested, including ATACMS long-range missiles. <…> The fear now is that the missiles will not be of much help to the Ukrainians because the Russians are positioning their aircraft beyond the range of these weapons.

The New York Times also noted that Biden is forced to “contain fatigue and dissatisfaction with the progress of the fighting in Ukraine, which emerged from the feeling that billions of dollars of American aid were wasted,” RBC reports.

U.S. officials also fear that the outspokenness of Ukrainian commander-in-chief Valery Zaluzhny will make it more difficult to convince Republicans to vote for continued financial assistance to Ukraine. Valery Zaluzhny stated that the fighting was moving into a new phase, turning into a “positional war of attrition.” He argued that “most likely there will not be a deep and beautiful breakthrough” and the situation at the front has reached a dead end. In its turn Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky stated that at the beginning of hostilities the situation was more complicated.
