A meeting between the leaders of Russia and the United States is possible if there is mutual desire and readiness. This was stated by the press secretary of the head of state, Dmitry Peskov, to TV presenter Pavel Zarubin.
He added that “certain conditions must mature.” In order to organize the summit, US leader Joe Biden must change his opinion on the Ukrainian crisis.
At the same time, Vladimir Putin is ready for any contacts, Peskov added.
He emphasized that the “collapse of the entire basis” of bilateral relations between the two countries occurred at the initiative of the United States. “Therefore, at a minimum, the head of the United States will have to change his position at some time, take a more constructive position,” the presidential press secretary noted, adding that then the conditions for the meeting will mature.
Peskov also noted that relations between Moscow and Washington are “at zero” or even “below zero.” However, one way or another, over time, “this conversation will have to be resumed,” since Russia and the United States bear a special responsibility for global and strategic stability, Peskov emphasized.
He added that Moscow’s attitude has changed – “what the Russian Federation did not previously show due attention to, is now reacting to it in an absolutely irreconcilable manner.”
Let us recall that the first meeting as presidents of Russia and the United States between Putin and Biden took place in June 2021 against the backdrop of data on the accumulation of Russian troops near the border with Ukraine. After the start of the military action in Ukraine, Biden did not rule out a meeting with Putin if the conversation becomes “the basis for the possibility of ending this conflict.”
