European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen believes that guarantees to “understand and mitigate the risks” associated with the use of artificial intelligence (AI) should be based on four conditions.
She named them while speaking in the UK at the first summit on the safe use of AI, Interfax reports.
“First, we need a thriving and independent scientific community equipped with the means to evaluate artificial intelligence systems. They need government funding and access to the best supercomputers,” she said. Secondly, according to von der Leyen, “there is a need to develop internationally accepted procedures and standards for testing the safety of AI.”
Third, “there should be a standard procedure whereby every significant incident caused by errors or misuse of AI will be reported and acted upon.” As a fourth condition, the head of the EC believes, a “reliable international warning system” should be created.
“These four pillars must constitute an effective management system. At the heart of all this must be a culture of responsibility. For private entities, this means one general principle: the greater the capabilities of the AI model and the associated risks, the higher the responsibility,” explained the President of the European Commission.
