Former football player of Lokomotiv, Torpedo and Krasnodar Ivan Bugaev was detained. This was reported by the joint press service of the courts of the Krasnodar Territory on Telegram.

The 42-year-old man was caught by operatives in Krasnodar – the police stopped his car for a personal search and found a bag of “unknown powder” in his sweatshirt pocket, reports the SHOT Telegram channel. When detained, he resisted and tried to escape.

The examination showed that the package seized from the athlete contained a drug.

A criminal case has been opened against Bugaev for drug trafficking on a particularly large scale. He was arrested for 7 days. He faces up to 20 years in prison.

As the Championship publication notes, the father of the ex-football player declared his son’s innocence. In his opinion, “events” are now being held in the Krasnodar Territory. “In a nutshell, he came under attack. I was in the wrong place at the wrong time,” the parent emphasized.

Bugaev himself, after a day in the detention center, agreed to cooperate with the investigation. He said that he worked as a drug courier and distributed bookmarks, writes the Shot channel. According to him, Bugaev explained that he made this decision because of financial difficulties in the family and debts. The athlete noted that he decided to buy 500 grams of the drug through the darknet and place them in bookmarks in Krasnodar and Sochi, as quoted by Lenta.ru.

In addition, the media writes, during the investigative actions, Bugaev provided information about his accomplices.

Bugaev performed at Euro 2004 as part of the Russian national team. He retired from his professional career in 2010 at the age of 29.
