Hamas does not represent the legitimate goals of the Palestinian people, but obstructs them and is a terrorist organization, President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola said at the European Union summit.
“We know that Hamas must be stopped. And we also emphasized that how this happens is important to all of us. How Israel responds at this moment is critical. As a parliament, we have always insisted and will always insist that international law be respected, concerns about the humanitarian consequences of actions against Hamas must be a priority and aid must reach innocent people in need,” she said.
“I must also emphasize that the strong stance we must take in the fight against terrorism and all the efforts we must take to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip are not mutually exclusive,” Metsola continued.
The speaker added that everything possible is being done to protect the lives of innocent people, work is underway to free the hostages and deliver aid. The European Parliament therefore called for a humanitarian pause to achieve these goals and welcomed the tripling of humanitarian aid for the Palestinian population announced by the European Commission, Interfax reports.
“It’s in the near future. In the long term, Europe must be prepared to commit. We must continue to push for a sustainable and lasting peace and a fair and just two-state solution. Europe has a role to play and we must be ready for it,” Metsola said.
The issue of the situation in the Middle East in light of the worsening Israeli-Palestinian conflict is being discussed on Thursday in Brussels by the heads of state and government of the European Union countries.
