“Scandal in Bashkiria”: deputies called on the authorities to “do something” about the cult of Rudolf Nureyev, calling him a “traitor to the motherland”

A scandal has erupted in Bashkiria around the personality of the legendary ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev. Some deputies of the Kurultai were indignant that a “personality cult” of Nuriev had actually been created in the republic, whom they called a “traitor to the motherland.”

“A street in Ufa, a museum and a ballet troupe in the theater are named after him, and an international festival is organized in his honor every year using budget funds. A choreographic college is named after Nuriev, known for his non-traditional sexual orientation,” follows from a letter from local parliamentarians signed by the head of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation faction, Yunir Kutluguzhin, to the Speaker of the State Assembly, Konstantin Tolkachev.

The deputies are confident that no hero of war, science or art has the honors that Nuriev was awarded, while the image of Nuriev is “LGBT propaganda” and the authorities need to do something about it, the authors of the appeal believe.

The response from the Speaker of the State Assembly has already been received. He harshly condemned the proposal of the deputies, calling on them not to try to “destroy the unspoken code of honor that has been formed over many years.” Tolkachev added that now deputies have more important things to do than “throwing mud at an outstanding person of whom everyone is proud.”

Let us remind you that Rudolf Nureyev was born in 1938 in the Primorsky Territory in the family of a Bashkir and a Tatar. He was the leading soloist of the Leningrad Opera and Ballet Theater named after Kirov (Mariinsky Theatre). In 1961, during a tour in Paris, he decided not to return to the USSR and asked the French authorities for political asylum. He settled in the capital, and 22 years later became choreographer of the Paris Opera. Nureyev met dancer Eric Brun in 1961. They became a couple and lived together for 25 years until Brun’s death.
