“They veto each other’s resolutions”: UN Security Council members cannot agree on the situation around Israel and Hamas

UN Security Council meeting

Since mid-October, several resolutions on the situation surrounding the conflict between Israel and Hamas have been submitted to the Security Council. The author of one of them was Russia, but the document proposed by Moscow on October 16 was rejected by the United States, vetoing it.

The Russian Federation called for an immediate ceasefire in the conflict zone. The document contained, among other things, calls for creating conditions for the evacuation of the civilian population. Security Council members were not satisfied that the document did not condemn Hamas.

At the same time, today, October 26, it became known that the project proposed by the United States was vetoed by Russia and China. According to RIA Novosti, the American draft resolution condemned the actions of Hamas, recognized Israel’s right to self-defense, but did not call for a ceasefire. Also, the document did not mention the need for the immediate and unconditional release of the hostages. The Russian Federation, however, said the day before that the Russian side would not vote for the American document and would propose its own version of the resolution for voting, noting that the Americans presented their version “saturated with politicized, inappropriate and extremely dubious provisions.”

The Security Council also considered the second Russian draft resolution on the conflict and also rejected it – the United States and Great Britain voted against it, and nine more countries abstained.

Another draft resolution, which proposed declaring the need to declare a humanitarian pause in military operations, was introduced the day before by Brazil. However, it was not adopted either – it was vetoed by the United States on October 18.

Meanwhile, the situation in the Gaza Strip remains tense. According to the UN, there is a humanitarian catastrophe in the enclave. The Palestinian Ministry of Health reported that since October 7, more than 6 thousand people have died in the Gaza Strip. At the same time, Israeli authorities reported 1.4 thousand victims. Let us recall that on October 7, the Palestinian movement attacked Israeli territory with rockets. In response, Israel blocked the Gaza Strip and announced preparations for a ground operation.
