“For words about Hamas”: Israel refused to issue visas to UN employees and called for the Secretary General to resign

Israel will not issue visas to UN representatives. Tel Aviv made this decision after statements by the organization’s Secretary General Antonio Guterres, explained Israel’s permanent representative to the UN Gilad Erdan, writes The Times of Israel.

According to him, Guterres’ words justify Hamas’ attack on Israel. “Because of his statements, we will refuse to issue visas to UN representatives. We have already denied a visa to Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths,” Erdan said, adding that “it’s time to teach them a lesson.”

Earlier, on October 21, Guterres spoke at a summit in Cairo and said that condemnation of attacks by the Palestinian Hamas movement on Israel cannot serve as a justification for the actions of the Israeli military in Gaza. After this, Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen refused to meet with him. Tel Aviv also called on Guterres to resign.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas escalated on October 7. On this day, the Palestinian movement attacked Israeli territory with rockets. In response, Israel blocked the Gaza Strip and announced preparations for a ground operation. According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, at least 5.7 thousand people died in the Gaza Strip. At the same time, Israeli authorities reported 1.4 thousand victims.
