World democracies, especially Western ones, whether presidential, parliamentary monarchies or parliamentary republics, are undoubtedly going through a deep crisis.

The oldest and most picturesque democracy on the planet, the United States, is showing almost shameful wear and tear on the face of the Earth.

Led by a president who seems senile and without lucidity, the leadership of the American state shows symptoms of weakness, inconsistency and little respect as a leader of the West.

In New York, the first in a long series of trials of Donald Trump, which speaks of a ‘court farce’, began

And on the other hand, a politician with a lot of reasons to question, Donald Trump, who is not only the first president of that country to be accused in a criminal trial, but was the manager of a policy style contrary to the institutional traditions of his country, and contrary to what was implicitly or explicitly the rules of democratic coexistence of this great nation.

This system was designed by the founding fathers, with a wisdom and vision of the future that is seldom possessed by any generation or group in history. They built a solid system of checks and balances and a solid institutional structure, whose legacy of almost 250 years is the most visible testimony of that legacy.

But even that giant democracy could not avoid the effects of the populist virus. Far from the intellectual value of yesterday’s politicians, Trump, inciting hatred and division, won the support of a significant share of voters who, contrary to the traditions of legality and institutions, supported and continue to support an absolutely unacceptable way of conducting politics.

If this democracy is like this, if it shows so many cracks to the world, what can we expect from ours?

And the response of the Democratic Party was to appoint an eighty-year-old who, unfortunately, no longer has enough clarity to lead the country, and a vice president with a special lack of depth and extremist beliefs that are also incompatible with the essence of the great American people.

This vacuum led to the fact that in the US Congress itself, the ability to reach consensus and internal division made it impossible to reach essential agreements, and that acephaly and lack of direction can be seen in that key institution in the history of the United States. If that democracy is like that, if it shows the world so many cracks, what can we expect from ours?

The Venezuelan opposition will vote this Sunday in a presidential election to face Maduro

Crises like those in Venezuela, Nicaragua or Colombia are sad, but ultimately they become “expected” or “logical”, due to the history of conflicts and internal wars, or the low credibility of their political systems.

But the fact that this state of affairs is happening in the United States democracy is the most troubling symptom of the disease that this Western system is experiencing, since whoever led and modeled the validity of separation of functions, checks and balances, and legal certainty is showing signs of cracks in the current democratic system today. which make us think a lot about the unquestionable need to reinvent and perfect this system in order to maintain it in the face of the great technological and cultural revolution of the 21st century.
