The warning of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities (Conaie) to the elected president Daniel Noboa Azín seems strange, illogical to say the least, when it has just come out of the electoral process, and its political interpretation shows the refusal of the citizens to conflict, since they speak of the need for unity to face serious problems of Ecuador.
And not only that. While the indigenous leadership demands the fulfillment of fifteen demands and warns that they will be “vigilant about decisions made in the light of any neoliberal package or anti-popular economic measures”, in the provinces where, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC), the largest indigenous population is comfortably won the president-elect on October 15.
Conaie’s demands to Daniel Noboa have divided the parties: some see it as a threat, others say it’s what Ecuador expects
In Morona Santiago, Daniel Noboa received 68.92% of the vote; in Chimborazo 65.84%; in Pichincha 60.13%; in Cotopaxi, 57.61%; and in Imbabura 50.56%. This speaks at least to the lack of agreement between the grassroots and their senior leadership, as one section even recommended a zero vote.
It’s not that Conaie or any other group of citizens is limited in proposing, because the new government has by no means taken office yet. You have to propose ideas, collaborate with projects that help the country. What does not contribute are positions that sound like a threat, and for some political actors even like violence.
Daniel Noboa was supported in the elections by indigenous communities, but now their political leaders are setting demands and conditions: “These are acts of destabilization and zero empathy with the situation in Ecuador”
Daniel Noboa won the votes of Sierra on Sunday, 2006 the whole region was leaning towards Rafael Correa
We have to give the management of the country, learn from mistakes, add. This is not the time to continue the conflict when the regime that will take office must work on what is urgent, what is necessary for the well-being of the 16,938,986 Ecuadorians, and at least channelize the struggles that require more than almost 18 months of its mandate until 2025.
Approaches and presentation of the country’s problems, ideas and proposals must be welcomed and listened to by the new president, warnings are inappropriate and premature. (OR)
