The Greek Orthodox Church of Saint Porphyrios is destroyed in Gaza by Israeli bombing.
As the Naftemporiki newspaper reports, citing sources in Gaza, dozens of people may be under the rubble of the temple. Most of those trapped under the rubble were parishioners who sought refuge from airstrikes in the historic church, as well as internally displaced persons from northern and southern Gaza. According to the newspaper, only about 1 thousand people took refuge in the church, its school and other facilities in Gaza.
In turn, Archbishop Alexis of Tiberias of the Orthodox Church of Jerusalem told the Greek TV channel ERT-1 that as a result of the rocket attack, “the entire building collapsed.” “They hit the offices and the entrance to the monastery. There were many Christians inside, many of whom were injured, and we also have deaths,” the archbishop said, adding that there were more than 400 people in the monastery and church.
Meanwhile, Al Jazeera’s Gaza correspondent reports that at least two people were killed and dozens injured when an Israeli bomb exploded at a Greek Orthodox church in the Gaza Strip.
The Palestinian Foreign Ministry on its social media account X stated that a woman and a girl were killed in an attack on an Orthodox church in Gaza. According to the department, “dozens of people were injured of varying degrees of severity,” and “parts of the church” were also seriously damaged.
Photos and videos from the scene of the incident appeared on social networks. By the way, the Church of St. Porphyry, founded at the beginning of the 5th century, was one of the oldest in the region.
