The 32-year-old police officer Álex Andrés Cuenca Cabrera died after being shot twice during an operation carried out at 06:00 this Friday, December 10, in the rural parish of Calichana, in the Pasaje canton, in El Oro.
The gendarme, who was a member of the Special Mobilized Anti-Narcotics Group of the El Oro Subzone, participated in the intervention of a building where it was intended to capture two suspects of an alleged mining crime.
According to a police report, the National Unit for the Investigation of Crimes against the Environment and Nature (Unidcan), with tactical support from the Gema command, were received with firearms.
One of the projectiles that hit Cuenca entered through the left side, at the level of the armpit, and – according to the first reports – it would be the bullet that caused his death.
The police colleagues observed that he collapsed and immediately gave him first aid, however, when he was transferred to a medical home, they confirmed his death.
It was reported that one of the two subjects who were inside the building fired at the police. That same person was injured in one of the legs.
The Police detailed that the raid was fulfilled with the mission of arresting the two people who were in the building; for this purpose, they had a court order as part of a prior investigation.
At the scene of the raid, the police seized a revolver-type firearm.
The body of the uniformed man was transferred to the Machala Forensic Center. In the afternoon it is planned to build a burning chapel in the Police Command of this province. (I)
