US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin ordered 2,000 troops to be put on high alert for possible deployment to the Middle East in connection with an attack on Israel by militants of the radical Palestinian movement Hamas, but no decision has been made on their deployment yet. This is stated in a distributed written statement by Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh, TASS reports.
“Secretary Austin today placed nearly 2,000 military personnel and multiple units on high alert, ordering deployment preparations that enhance the Department of Defense’s ability to quickly respond to the changing security environment in the Middle East. At present, no decisions have been made on the transfer of any forces,” said a representative of the military department.
She said Austin “will continue to evaluate [американских] forces and maintain close contacts with US allies and partners. In addition, he approved an extension to the deployment of the Gerald Ford carrier strike group, which is currently in the eastern Mediterranean. However, Singh did not indicate the timing of the extension.
