Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, is not the legitimate representative of all Palestinians. This statement was made by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas while talking by telephone with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, AFP reports.
Abbas also asked to provide assistance to civilians in the Gaza Strip and to open humanitarian corridors. He called for an end to Israel’s aggressive actions against the Palestinians.
US President Joe Biden expressed a similar position. He spoke out for the existence of a Palestinian state and against the Israeli occupation of the Gaza Strip, CBS reports. Biden said Israel’s occupation of the Gaza Strip would be a “big mistake,” adding that Hamas does not represent the entire Palestinian people.
The President of the United States admitted that negotiations on opening humanitarian corridors for residents of the Gaza Strip are going hard.
At the same time, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres addressed the Israeli leadership. He called on the country’s leadership to allow humanitarian supplies to the Gaza Strip, an official statement published on the organization’s website.
Guterres also called on the Palestinian Hamas movement to release hostages held in Israel.
“My responsibility as UN Secretary General is to make two humanitarian appeals. To Hamas – the hostages must be released immediately and unconditionally. To Israel, to provide speedy and unhindered access for humanitarian supplies and workers for the sake of the civilian population of Gaza,” Guterres said.
According to him, Gaza is running out of water, electricity and other important resources. The UN has supplies of aid and they can be sent within a few hours.
Let us remind you that the war between Israel and Hamas has been going on since October 7. On this day, the Palestinian movement attacked Israeli territory with hundreds of rockets and captured several populated areas. Israel launched a retaliatory operation by blockading the Gaza Strip. Preparations for ground operations are currently underway.
