Iran could intervene in the conflict if Israel launches a promised ground offensive in the Gaza Strip. Axios writes about this, citing sources.
It is noted that the warning to Israel was made through the UN – at a meeting in Beirut, the message was conveyed to the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Thor Wennesland by Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian. It is noted that the meeting discussed “diplomatic efforts to free the hostages, de-escalate and prevent the conflict from spreading to the wider region.”
According to media reports, Abdollahian clarified that “Tehran does not want the conflict to escalate into a regional war” and intends to try to help free civilians held hostage by the Hamas movement. However, Iran has “red lines,” Abdollahian warned. According to him, if Israel carries out a ground operation, Tehran will be “forced to respond.” How exactly, he did not specify.
The publication writes that if Iran is involved in the conflict directly or indirectly, the war will become regional.
Earlier it was reported that Israel temporarily postponed the start of the ground operation.
Let us recall that the escalation of the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas movement began on October 7, when the movement’s militants fired at Israeli territory. In response, Israel set up a blockade of the Gaza Strip, local residents were “trapped”, they were asked to evacuate, but they had nowhere to go. Currently, there is a difficult humanitarian situation in the enclave – there is no water or electricity in the houses. Meanwhile, Israel is preparing for a ground operation.
