NYT: Israel postpones ground operation in Gaza

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has postponed its planned ground operation in the Gaza Strip for the weekend. This was reported by The New York Times with reference to senior Israeli officers.

According to media reports, the operation was postponed “by several days” due to cloudy weather – which could prevent drone operators from providing air support that is supposed to provide cover for ground troops.

Israeli soldiers were ordered to capture Gaza City and destroy the region’s top military and political leadership, media writes. Residents of the city have already been asked to evacuate, but they have nowhere to go. Those living in northern Gaza were asked to move to the southern part within 24 hours.

1.1 million people must be evacuated per day, where in total, according to official data, 2.2 million live, notes IA Regnum. However, people have nowhere to run. Many remain in their homes without water or electricity and problems with sewage pumping. According to local residents quoted by the media, there are no bomb shelters in the sector, and during the Israeli army’s bombings people had previously stayed at home, which is why many were buried under the rubble. Most of the dead are women and children.

The death toll in the Gaza Strip, according to the UN, has risen to 2,215 people, of which 724 are children. Another 8,714 were injured. 1,324 residential and non-residential buildings with 5,540 housing units were destroyed. Another 3,743 housing units were permanently damaged.

The Israeli army’s ground operation is planned to include combined and coordinated air, sea and land strikes. This could be Israel’s first attempt to take control of the Gaza Strip since troops entered the Gaza Strip in 2008.

Let us remind you that the Gaza Strip is controlled by the Palestinian Hamas movement, which attacked the southern regions of Israel on the morning of October 7.
