The 1st Fyodor Chaliapin International Competition for Young Opera Performers opens in the Northern capital on Saturday, October 14. The event, dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of the Russian bass, will run until October 18. The prize fund of the competition exceeds 1 million rubles.
The organizers of the cultural event were the Chaliapin Musical Theater and the State Museum of Theater and Musical Art. It is held with the support of the Committee for Culture of St. Petersburg and the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives.
According to the organizers, the competition received 213 applications from singers from 13 countries in Europe and Asia. At the same time, the jury allowed 36 participants to participate in the first round, including representatives of Russia, Belarus, Mongolia and Uzbekistan.
The first two rounds of the competition will take place at the Museum of Theater and Musical Arts. The finale of the event will take place in the Great Hall of the St. Petersburg Academic Philharmonic named after Dmitry Shostakovich. After this, a gala concert is planned on October 18 in the Great Hall of the Philharmonic with performances by finalists and famous opera singers.
“I am happy that we have a competition named after Chaliapin in our city. It’s gratifying that there are people who follow us and want to be part of this culture,” People’s Artist of Russia Olga Kondina commented on the initiative, TASS reports.
