The Ministry of Internal Affairs has put a wanted list on a Ukrainian businessman who received Russian citizenship from Putin

The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs has put Eduard Shifrin, a businessman of Ukrainian origin, on the wanted list for criminal charges, as follows from the department’s database.

“Grounds for search: wanted under an article of the Criminal Code,” the card says. For what specific article Shifrin was put on the wanted list is not specified in the database, RBC writes.

Eduard Shifrin was born in 1960 in Dnepropetrovsk. After the privatization of the enterprise, Zaporizhstal became its main shareholder. He was also a co-founder of the holding company Midland Group, which is involved in metal processing, shipping, real estate and agriculture.

In 2016, Shifrin received Russian citizenship by decree of President Vladimir Putin.

Shifrin was also vice-president of the Jewish Confederation of Ukraine and regional vice-president of the World Jewish Congress, and was involved in charity work, including directing funds for the construction of synagogues in Russia and Ukraine. In 2020, he left for Israel.

After the start of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, Shifrin condemned Moscow’s actions and announced on social networks that he had written a statement renouncing Russian citizenship. He also told in an interview with the Jerusalem Post that he transfers funds to help the Jewish community of Kyiv and directs funds to help Ukrainians.
