Aftonbladet: Swedish expert counts 100 Russian battalions ready to invade Ukraine

Swedish specialist in Russian and Doctor of Military Sciences Oskar Jonsson believes that the hypothetical Russian invasion of Ukraine will surpass the most impressive forecasts of the Ukrainian military. He stated this in an interview with the daily Aftonbladet.

“I think that the map published in Military Timesis outdated, ”he says. “It talks about 40 Russian battalions, but American sources say that there are already 50, and soon there will be 100. With the capabilities that Russia has, they will be able to capture and hold much larger territories.”

At the same time, Oskar Jonsson believes that Russia has failed to achieve its goal – to ward off the sympathies of Ukrainians from the West. On the contrary, he is confident that sympathies for NATO and the EU are stronger than ever, and points to both the achievements of the Ukrainian information technology sector and the political system, which, despite all the problems, was able to peacefully transfer power from one president to another, and to the “growing the power of the Ukrainian army “, which has grown from” several thousand combat-ready soldiers “to 250 thousand.

Nevertheless, he also points to the advantages of the armed forces of the Russian Federation, referring primarily to the capabilities of the Air Force and long-range artillery.

“Russian strategists have learned from how things were going in western Afghanistan, they have an understanding that it is not so easy to control a territory with a hostile population. I think they should be careful trying to capture too large territories, ”says Oskar Jonsson, who believes that Russia is seeking to disarm Ukraine and impose its demands on it.

The possible “invasion” of Russia into Ukraine remains one of the main topics of the world mass media of the last month. It all started with satellite photographs of Russian military equipment, which is supposedly concentrated in regions close to Ukraine. At the same time, both Kiev and its foreign partners either declare the need for the toughest sanctions against Russia in order to stop the “invasion”, which will begin any day, then they assure that they have no reliable information about the date of the “invasion” and its likelihood.
