The defense of the rector of the Moscow Higher School of Social and Economic Sciences (“Shaninka”) Sergei Zuev, accused of embezzling 21 million rubles, filed a petition with the prosecutor’s office and the investigator with a request to release him after the statement of Russian President Vladimir Putin. This is reported by TASS with reference to a member of the Moscow POC, Alexander Khurudzhi.
“The rector’s lawyers filed a petition to the Moscow Prosecutor Denis Popov, the head of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Oleg Baranov and the investigator in whose proceedings the case is, a petition for his release,” he said. Zuev, who underwent heart surgery shortly before his arrest, is currently in the medical unit of the Matrosskaya Tishina pre-trial detention center.
The case, of which Zuev turned out to be a defendant, was initiated on the fact of embezzlement by fraud of money belonging to the Fund for New Forms of Education Development, allocated within the framework of the Teacher of the Year federal project. The ex-deputy head of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation Marina Rakova, former employees of the fund Yevgeny Zak, Maxim Inkin, Artur Stetsenko and the executive director of Shaninka Kristina Kryuchkova were also arrested in this case.
On the eve, Russian President Vladimir Putin, during a meeting of the Human Rights Council, said that Zuev had no place in a pre-trial detention center. “I see no need to keep him behind bars,” the head of state said in response to the speech of Nikolai Svanidze, a member of the HRC.
