A report by the Citizens’ Observatory on Political Violence, published on October 4, shows that Ecuador in 2023 experienced the most violent electoral process in its history.

The audit for 2022 and 2023 identified 88 cases of political violence. Twenty-one of them were created during the presidential elections, which are still ongoing due to the second round.

Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. H H. condemns the political violence in Ecuador and asks the state to sanction the events

Unfortunately for Ecuador, it went so far as to assassinate a presidential candidate. Contamination with violence in politics appeared little by little. The disbelief of the authorities and the repeated phrases about “reconciling the gangs” or “victims with criminal records” have taken the nation to the top of the most violent countries in the world due to the accelerated career of organized crime and slow official action.

Collateral victims of added impunity also cause the growth of distrust in institutions.

With such a background, the international community turned its attention to Ecuador and, for example, in the case of the murdered presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio, an FBI commission arrived from the United States to cooperate with the investigation. In addition, the same state has offered a reward of five million dollars to anyone who helps locate those responsible for the incident.

According to a recent report, 84% of cases of political violence in Ecuador were directed at men and 16% at women. It is absolutely necessary that the state as a whole undertakes to ensure that all cases are rigorously investigated and punished. We cannot forget the murdered mayors, councilors and other political actors. In addition to the political violence in this report, innocent victims of crime will be present in all citizens’ demands for justice.

With external cooperation and internal resolve, it is still possible for Ecuador to recover from its current sad moment. (OR)
