For the first time in US history, the speaker of the lower house of Congress was dismissed: suspected of collusion in Ukraine

By a majority vote, the US House of Representatives dismissed its speaker, Republican Party representative Kevin McCarthy. This is the first time in US history.

McCarthy’s party member Matt Gaetz initiated the resignation vote. Among the complaints against the speaker was the adoption of a temporary budget for funding the federal government, which allowed the United States to avoid a shutdown. McCarthy was also accused of allegedly conspiring with US President Joe Biden to approve a “secret deal” to finance Ukraine.

Potential presidential candidates from the Republican Party have already expressed bewilderment at the position of fellow party members in the House of Representatives. In particular, as CNN reports, former US President Donald Trump expressed a lack of understanding on the social network Truth Social why “Republicans are always fighting among themselves” and not “fighting the radical left-wing Democrats who are destroying our country?” Former Vice President Mike Pence said he was “deeply disappointed” that a handful of House Republicans voted to remove McCarthy. And former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson called the incident a “gift to the Democrats.”
