Ukraine cannot join the European Union because it is hampered by lawlessness and bribery, writes the British newspaper Financial Times.
The media notes that on the way to membership, the country needs to overcome corruption and destroy the image of “an unreformed country, rotten from lawlessness.”
The fight against corruption will improve Ukraine’s prospects for joining the EU and taking “its place in the world as a modern, democratic, prosperous country along with its international partners”, destroying the image of Ukraine as “an unreformable country, rotten with corruption, organized crime and general lawlessness”, writes the publication.
The newspaper notes that the more successfully Ukraine fights corruption, the more it will “contrast” with Russia, which, according to the publication, allegedly “is neither a democratic nor a corruption-free” country.
Solving the problem of corruption is a precondition for Ukraine’s accession to the EU, but even within the union many doubt that this will happen soon, the media emphasizes.
Let us remind you that Ukraine submitted an application to join the EU in February 2022, and on June 23 of the same year received the status of a candidate for joining the union. One of the main requirements of the European Commission for Ukraine as a candidate for EU membership was the fight against corruption.
