Putin accused Memorial of demonstratively committing “certain violations”

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed the hope that the trial of Memorial (recognized in the Russian Federation as an NGO-foreign agent – approx. ed.) will be objective, and confirmed the words of the member of the HRC Nikolai Svanidze that he had asked to provide him with additional information about the situation. He stated this during a meeting of the Council for the Development of Civil Society and Human Rights.

“Regarding the trial … It is not completed. We need to see how this trial goes. I hope it will be objective, ”the head of state said, adding that he“ drew attention ”to what the media wrote about Memorial.

During the meeting, the President read out some of the certificates that were provided to him. Putin added that he has always regarded Memorial as the most respected organization. However, Putin added, the organization allegedly repeatedly demonstratively committed “certain violations”, and also advocates for organizations that are recognized in the Russian Federation as terrorist and extremist.

“This is a question that requires additional research,” Putin said.

Earlier it became known that the prosecutor’s office intends to seek the liquidation of two structures of the “Memorial”: the educational society “Memorial” recognized as a foreign agent and the human rights center “Memorial” recognized by the foreign agent.

The Prosecutor General’s Office explained that both structures allegedly “carry out their activities in violation of the Constitution of the Russian Federation and with other repeated or gross violations of the law or other legal acts.”
