The Kremlin responded to Pashinyan’s criticism

Russia will never agree with Yerevan’s reproaches that “Russian peacekeepers cannot properly ensure the security of Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh.” This was stated by the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov during a press call.

He emphasized that the Russian peacekeeping contingent in the region “shows real heroism, performing its functions in accordance with the mandate that they have.” Peskov, however, found it difficult to answer the question of whether Russian peacekeepers will remain in the region.

The Kremlin representative also called Armenia an ally of the Russian Federation. “Armenia remains our ally, a state close to us. Armenians are a people close to us, you know that more Armenians live in our country than in the whole of Armenia,” Peskov said, adding that Moscow will continue the dialogue with Yerevan.

He also emphasized that in order to resolve the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, it is important to avoid attempts by third parties to have a presence in the Caucasus. “The main thing is to avoid attempts by third parties to establish their presence in the Caucasus in vain, without the existing mediation potential,” Peskov noted. At the same time, he said, the Kremlin will welcome the efforts of third parties to reduce tensions and “integrate the Armenian population of Karabakh into a new reality.”

Let us recall that on September 14, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that the Russian peacekeeping contingent in Nagorno-Karabakh had failed in its task. On September 19, Azerbaijan announced the holding of “local anti-terrorist measures” in Karabakh. The hostilities lasted for a day; with the mediation of Russian peacekeepers, the Armenian population of Karabakh and Azerbaijan agreed on a ceasefire. On September 24, Pashinyan, in a message to citizens, stated that Russian peacekeepers cannot properly ensure the security of Armenians in Karabakh.
