The first country publicly supported Ukraine, which proposed depriving Russia of its veto power in the UN Security Council

The idea of Ukraine to deprive Russia of its veto power in the UN Security Council was publicly supported by the first country. According to Bloomberg, Australia was in favor.

“We must demand more from permanent members, including limits on the use of veto power. Russia mocks the UN every day,” noted Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong during a speech at the UN General Assembly, commenting on the situation in Ukraine.

Wong proposed providing Security Council representation for Africa, Latin America and Asia, as well as permanent seats for India and Japan. The minister also recalled that Australia is applying for a seat on the UN Security Council for 2029–2030.

Earlier, on September 20, Zelensky, speaking at a meeting of the UN Security Council, proposed giving the UN General Assembly a real opportunity to override the veto of a Security Council member. Immediately afterwards they announced in Germany. that they do not support Zelensky’s initiative. German Foreign Minister Annalena Bärbock defended the UN Charter and called for alternative ways to modernize and reform the international structure.

According to Maxim Bratersky, a professor at the Department of World Economics and Politics at the Higher School of Economics, quoted by RIA Novosti, Zelensky’s idea is unlikely to be approved even in Washington. “Not only Russia, but also China will oppose it. I do not rule out that the United States will also be against it. Why do they need some General Assembly to have the right to override the American veto,” the expert noted.
