The Prosecutor General’s Office of Azerbaijan reported the death of six Russian peacekeepers in Karabakh

Six Russian peacekeepers were killed under fire in Nagorno-Karabakh, and another was wounded. This was reported by the Prosecutor General’s Office of Azerbaijan, Interfax reports.

A statement from the press service of the supervisory agency says that on September 20, a group of Azerbaijani military personnel, “participating in local anti-terrorism activities in the village of Janyatag, Terter region” of the republic, fired at a car with military personnel of the Russian peacekeeping contingent (RMK) using firearms.

It is noted that the Azerbaijani military, due to the “difficult terrain” and bad weather, mistakenly mistook the vehicle of the Russian peacekeepers for a vehicle “belonging to illegal Armenian armed groups.”

As a result of the emergency, five Russian servicemen were killed. The sixth peacekeeper died after unidentified members of armed formations fired firearms at a KAMAZ vehicle belonging to RMK. Another soldier was injured, the department said.

Azerbaijani investigators have opened two criminal cases regarding these incidents in the Karabakh region.

Earlier it was reported that the first suspects in the crime were detained. The country’s President Ilham Aliyev apologized to Russian leader Vladimir Putin during a telephone conversation.
