The main issue of Karabakh’s ownership has been resolved. This was announced by the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov. He added that progress towards a peace treaty has been ensured, Interfax reports.
According to Peskov, “now it’s unlikely that anyone will undertake to set a time frame for signing a peace treaty.” “But given that the main issue of Karabakh’s ownership as such has now been resolved, it has been resolved and settled by Armenia’s decision to recognize Karabakh’s ownership, we can say that significant progress has been ensured,” the Kremlin spokesman said.
He added that a “period of sustainable ceasefire” is beginning in Nagorno-Karabakh, and Azerbaijan has an understanding that the legitimate interests and security of the Armenian population in the region must be ensured.
In addition, Peskov added that an investigation is underway after the death of Russian peacekeepers in Nagorno-Karabakh. “An apology has been made, we have seen information that some people there have been suspended from their duties. There are people detained in this regard. We don’t know all the details of this yet, but at least an investigation is underway,” Peskov noted, as quoted by TASS.
Let us recall that on September 19, the armed forces of Azerbaijan launched an “anti-terrorist operation” in Nagorno-Karabakh. As a result, at least 200 people were killed and another 400 were injured, said Commissioner for Human Rights in Nagorno-Karabakh Gegham Stepanyan. On September 20, several Russian peacekeepers were killed – their exact number is not reported. They were fired upon by small arms in the area of the village of Dzhanyatag. From 13:00 on September 20, a ceasefire was established in Nagorno-Karabakh. Baku announced the completion of the “anti-terrorist operation”, and Yerevan unilaterally announced the decision to lay down arms and cease fire.
On September 21, a meeting between Azerbaijan and representatives of Armenians in Karabakh took place in Yevlakh. Baku said it had provided representatives of the Armenians of Karabakh with a draft peace agreement.
