The giant manger of El Panecillo and eight places in Quito are illuminated for the Christmas festivities

Sculptures and Christmas decorations were located in squares, parks and streets. The facilities will be turned on every night until January 6.

The giant El Pancillo manger, 42 meters high, was re-illuminated for the Christmas holidays. This is a tradition in Quito that has been going on for 20 years. The lights of the seven metal sculptures, located next to the Virgin of Legarda, were turned on at 7:00 p.m. on December 8.

The work imitates the manger of Saint Francis of Assisi, which recreates the birth of Jesus. The figures represent Saint Joseph; the three Wise Men, Melchor, Gaspar and Baltazar; an ass and an ox. There are also arches, path type, eight trees with around 2,000 bulbs

The installation and lighting of the structures was in charge of the Metropolitan Public Mobility and Public Works Company (Epmmop). 15,000 meters of light hose and 15,200 bulbs were used.

At the same time as in El Panecillo, Christmas decorations and 15-meter sculptures were lit in eight other places in the city: reindeer, giant canes, kites, Christmas trees, rainbows, clovers, snowflakes and large bells, reported Jorge Merlo, manager of the Epmmop. These sites are:

  • Big square
  • Velasco Ibarra linear park
  • United Nations Boulevard
  • San José Park
  • Calderón Park
  • Rio Grande Linear Park
  • Roundel of El Calzado
  • La Raya Park

All the facilities will be illuminated every night until January 6 of next year.

During the event, the mayor of Quito, Santiago Guarderas, stated that this is part of the measures to reactivate the historic center and the economy. “It is time to unite as a family, as Quiteños,” he said. (I)
