The Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan announced the start of local anti-terrorist measures in Nagorno-Karabakh. As the department’s press service reported, the country informed the command of the Russian peacekeeping contingent and the leadership of the Turkish-Russian Monitoring Center about this.
The statement says that “anti-terrorism measures of a local nature” are carried out “in order to ensure the provisions of the tripartite statement (of the leaders of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia of November 9, 2020), suppress large-scale provocations in the Karabakh economic region, disarmament and withdrawal of formations of the Armed Forces of Armenia from the territories , neutralizing their military infrastructure, as well as restoring the constitutional order of Azerbaijan.”
The Ministry of Defense noted that “the civilian population and civilian infrastructure are not targets.” In the course of anti-terrorist measures, Baku intends to “use high-precision weapons to eliminate the positions of the Armenian Armed Forces, their long-term firing points, as well as combat assets and military facilities.”
In turn, the Ministry of Defense of Armenia, against the backdrop of the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, stated that the situation on the country’s borders is relatively stable.
For her part, official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova said that Russia is in contact with Azerbaijan in light of Baku’s “anti-terrorist operation” in Karabakh.
