Some foods have a negative effect on human cognitive function. A group of scientists came to this conclusion, writes MedicForum.
Experts conducted an experiment with the participation of 95 healthy young people aged 20 to 30 years. 48 of the participants were women, 47 were men. They were fed foods made from refined carbohydrates. Based on the results of the experiment, scientists found that such a diet negatively affected cognitive function in both sexes.
This conclusion was explained by neurologist Vyacheslav Pavlov, quoted by the publication. He noted that not all carbohydrates are created equal. Healthy carbohydrates are an essential source of fuel for the brain – they are broken down into glucose, which supports overall cognitive function. Thus, whole carbohydrates are unprocessed and contain fiber that occurs naturally in food. However, refined carbohydrates are considered “empty” calories because the processing process strips them of almost all their fiber, vitamins and minerals.” Consumption of such products may indeed be associated with decreased brain function, the doctor added.
According to him, refined carbohydrates are breakfast cereals, pasta, pastries, pizza dough, sweet desserts, white bread.
Moreover, refined carbohydrates also affect mental health and can cause depression. This follows a report from a team of scientists who studied data from more than 70,000 postmenopausal women. They found that refined foods such as white bread, white rice and carbonated drinks trigger a hormonal response in the body that lowers blood sugar levels. This reaction may also cause or worsen mood changes, fatigue and other symptoms of depression, the scientists found. They warn that a diet high in refined carbohydrates may contribute to the development of anxiety and depressive behavior.
