In Ambato they promote a campaign to avoid begging and child labor

When a person ‘collaborates’ with a coin, their intention to help causes more people to take to the streets to ask for money, using children.

“Your currency condemns them” is the campaign presented by the Cantonal Council for the Protection of Rights of Ambato (CCPDA) in alliance with the Lions Club, Ambato volunteers, the big city and the Ministry of Economic and Social Inclusion (MIES) in order to avoid the money charity and promote the donation of toys and candies to carry out Christmas festivities and prevent children from being forced to beg at this time of Christmas.

Kléber Peñaherrera, executive secretary of the CCPDA, regretted that the socioeconomic problem of families does not allow children to be taken from the streets, but that they increase, proof of that is that in a year and a half 172 protection measures have been issued in favor of of infants who were in a work situation.

When a person ‘collaborates’ with a coin, their intention to help generates that more people take to the streets to ask for money and for this they use their children.

He assured that after the protection measures, 120 children have been taken from work in the streets, but the rest persist. Given this, the official said that processes have been initiated in the Prosecutor’s Office against their parents for not complying with the provisions of the competent authority, but they have changed their address and are no longer in the city because they are foreign people who are in mobility.

Currently, the Ambato authorities have identified 32 children whose parents keep them in economic exploitation and begging, making them ask for money at traffic lights or cleaning windshields. In this group, dispersed by different sectors of the city, the majority are foreigners, but there are also those who come to the Tungurah capital from rural sectors of the Pasa, Pilahuín and Santa Rosa parishes.

Peñaherrera clarified that the largest number of Ecuadorian children who are in a situation of child labor are located within the network of squares and markets, mainly in the Wholesale market and in places of commerce in the central area of Ambato.

He explained that the protection measures issued by the Cantonal Board for the Protection of the Rights of Children and Adolescents of Ambato many times seek to repair the rights that have been violated, for which, through the corresponding instances, follow-up is carried out to guarantee that are being restored. Even, he said, acts of commitment have been signed with parents that they will not continue in a situation of child exploitation.

Donations for children’s entertainment are received until December 17 from 08:00 to 16:30 both in the Lions Club and in the Ambato Sur Municipality building, Huachi Chico sector. (I)
