The Minister of Sports spoke about the damage from the change of citizenship by Russians

Matytsin said that changing citizenship by athletes does not harm Russia

Russian Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin spoke about the change of citizenship by athletes. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.

Matytsin said that the change of citizenship by athletes does not harm Russia. “The important task here is to create conditions under which athletes would be interested in continuing their careers here,” he noted.

Earlier, the total number of athletes who changed their citizenship became known. “55 athletes in Olympic sports changed their citizenship, if we take non-Olympic sports, then this figure has exceeded 100,” said Deputy Minister of Sports Alexei Morozov.

At the end of February 2022, many sports organizations banned Russians from participating in tournaments on the recommendation of the International Olympic Committee. At the same time, in some disciplines, such as tennis, MMA and chess, Russian athletes were not excluded and continued to perform in a neutral status.
