The European Commission (EC) explained the ban on Russians importing cars and other personal belongings into the EU. RBC writes about this with reference to the EC’s response.
They noted that the direct decision on how to apply EU Council sanctions will be made by specific member countries of the union. That is, each individual national authority must ensure compliance with EU sanctions.
Let us recall that earlier the EC issued clarifications according to which Russian citizens were prohibited from entering the European Union with personal smartphones, cars, jewelry and laptops. It was noted that Russians crossing the EU border cannot bring with them mobile phones, laptops, suitcases, cosmetics, leather and fur products, semi-precious stones, toilet paper, shampoos, toothpastes, cameras. EU customs authorities may not allow them through.
It is also prohibited to enter the EU countries with cars registered in Russia. This will be considered a prohibited import. It does not matter whether the vehicle is used for private or commercial purposes if it falls under the customs codes listed in Annex XXI, including code 8703, the EC clarified. This code 8703 covers cars and other vehicles designed to carry fewer than ten people.
