Due to his role as Siara in “Kiler”, he was put in a drawer. He could have starred in the cult series, but he refused

Although Janusz Rewiñski has many excellent acting credits to his credit, the role of Siara from the cult “Kiler” has stuck to him. Few know that he could get rid of it by accepting a role in a now popular series. What production are we talking about?

He retired from show business a few years ago, but he is still considered one of the most popular actors in the domestic film industry. He began his career performing in cabarets, and in numerous skits he mocked the absurdities of life in the Polish People’s Republic. He gained popularity in the 1980s thanks to productions such as “Akademia Pana Kleksa”, “Pierścień i Róża” and “Zmiennicy”.

The role of Siara brought him popularity. He was labeled a movie gangster

Without a doubt, the most popular acting role in his career was the role of gangster Stefan “Siara” Siarzewski in the comedy directed by Juliusz Machulski, which was released in 1997. Then he gained nationwide recognition and critical acclaim, and his career quickly gained momentum. His hero’s lyrics and humorous sayings have become almost iconic. Two years later, he also appeared in the sequel titled “Kiler-ów 2-óch”, strengthening his position in the film industry.

However, he quickly realized that fame has not only its highlights, but also its shadows. Although Siara’s role brought him to the top, it significantly limited his professional development. In 1999, he played the role of an underworld businessman in “Tigers of Europe” by Jerzy Gruza, and the gangster label stuck with him for good. He began to receive less and less ambitious proposals, and the directors were unable to imagine him in any other version. It was then that he unexpectedly got the chance to create a hero who could change his fate.

He was supposed to play the head of the Kiepski family. Why did he refuse?

Few people know that Rewiński was the first candidate for the role of Ferdynand in the cult series. Thus, he had the opportunity to change his image and prove his artistic versatility. The script was supposed to decide whether he would accept the role, but when he read it, he felt disappointed and ultimately did not cooperate. His place was taken by Andrzej Grabowski, who made a permanent mark in the history of Polish cinematography with this role. The production hit the screens in March 1999 and enjoyed unflagging viewership until 2022.

Many claimed that after the success of the comedy series, Rewiński regretted rejecting the main role. However, he himself never commented on these reports. He worked persistently for his success not only as an actor, but also as a presenter. In a duo with Krzysztof Piasecki, he created the cabaret program “Ale Plama” on TVN, and later hosted, among others, “It’s a shame to talk” or “Siara w kuluarach”. Ultimately, he withdrew from public life and retreated to his ranch near Mińsk Mazowiecki. – The job of a satirist is over. There are plenty of epigones, fakes and amateurs. I’m not being hired. (…) There was Siara, there was Nowak, I played a few songs, maybe that’s enough – he said in an interview for .
