Coffee can prevent depression. This conclusion was made by the neurologist Alexandra Alekhina, writes MedikForum.
The experts cited numerous studies. For example, we analyzed data from more than 145,000 adults who were interviewed between 2006 and 2010, as well as in 2016. Of these, almost 20% of respondents said they do not drink coffee, about 70% – from one to three cups, and the remaining 10% – more than three cups a day. As a result, depression and anxiety were the least common among those who drank two to three cups a day. Overall, according to a meta-analysis with data from several hundred thousand people, coffee consumption reduces the subsequent risk of depression by about 10%.
The doctor agreed with the results of the study. According to the specialist, caffeine stimulates the central nervous system, promotes the transfer of dopamine and blocks adenosine receptors in the brain: it activates and elevates mood. As a result, coffee lovers are less likely to fall into a depressed state. However, the dosage and composition of the drink is important, the doctor added. In her opinion, it is better to use ground and unsweetened black coffee, less often – coffee with milk and with the addition of sugar or artificial sweeteners. Alyokhina also added that regular coffee consumption is not recommended for those who have health problems, such as chronic diseases of the intestines or stomach.
