There are more than 15,000 video surveillance cameras in Guayaquil. In order to give them greater functionality, on May 23, Mayor Aquiles Alvarez and the Government signed an agreement on connecting the technological systems of the two institutions in the fight against organized crime.
A chronicle published by the Permanent Committee for the Defense of Human Rights (CDH) on its website warns of video cameras that are installed privately.
It is common for some homes and businesses to install the devices as a deterrent to crime, but a news article warns that criminal groups are using the cameras to specifically monitor young people and children they are recruiting in different communities in Ecuador.
“We may not be able to stop criminals from attacking us, but their faces will be recorded”: drivers install cameras in vehicles to prevent insecurity
The first job they get is drug dealers and they consume that too. The CDH report reveals that some private cameras are installed outside houses with the owner’s permission, others are not addressed, but they do not even dare to confront those who connect them. They belong to gangs, says the agency’s source.
The use of cameras as a device to help security is positive, beyond criticism in the sense that videos go viral and criminals are rarely caught.
The CDH’s warning should be taken with full attention and watch for the purpose of installing the cameras without affecting the community.
Five thousand cameras already detect plates, faces and suspicious movements in unsafe areas of Guayaquil
The purpose of cameras that contribute to the fight against crime must be protected. The police, municipalities and other bodies are obliged to ensure that these devices, which have gained the trust of citizens hoping for a little more security, are not infected.
One possibility is to approach communities to create information circles and effectively manage the data they can offer, including neighborhood care. These contributions must be appreciated. (OR)
