They hold a sit-in to demand justice for the crime of Juan Bermeo, which occurred a year ago in the north of Cuenca

Juan Bermeo was assassinated a year ago while doing his daily exercise routine in the vicinity of Miraflores park.

CUENCA

The voice of a child who said “justice for my daddy” resounded in a megaphone that was located in the middle of a group of people gathered in the lower part of the Government of Azuay, in the center of Cuenca, on the afternoon of this Monday 6 of December.

Those were the heartfelt words of the son of Juan Bermeo, a young man murdered at dawn on December 6, 2020 in the vicinity of the Miraflores park, in the north of the city.

Today, relatives returned to claim that the investigations, according to them, are not progressing after a year of the crime.

Juan Bermeo was murdered a year ago while doing his daily exercise routine. Nobody imagined that after that day he would never return. After the tragic episode, a complaint was filed with the Prosecutor’s Office to try to catch those responsible, but everything has been in vain until now, according to Alfonso, the deceased’s father.

The Bermeo family has carried out several sit-ins in these twelve months, but has not received further information on the progress and results of the investigations. For this reason, with posters, shouts, T-shirts and posters they demanded this Monday that the event not go unpunished.

The common request was for justice, but not only for Juan Bermeo but for all the cases still unsolved in Cuenca. Likewise, they also called for more security in favor of all the citizens of the Azuayan capital, as some inhabitants consider that police surveillance is limited in the city.

Some of the relatives were received by the governor of Azuay, Matías Abad, to explain the progress of a process that was defined as reserved.

Bermeo’s father said he only wants “that they offer what they comply” on the investigations related to the murder. While they were demonstrating peacefully in the lower part of the Interior, the door of this unit was guarded by armed policemen.

Faced with the claim, the governor of Azuay replied that “they have been working” on the issue, but clarified that direct responsibility for the process is in the hands of the Prosecutor’s Office, an entity that has not ruled on the fact in recent hours. (I)
