The lawyers seek that their client, sentenced to death for the murder of four people, can return to Ecuador.
Defense of Nelson Serrano, 82-year-old Ecuadorian sentenced to death in the state of Florida for the murder of four people in 1997, asks the president Guillermo Lasso diplomatic assistance in USA to “save” his life, due to his advanced age and deteriorating health.
The lawyers point out that diplomatic assistance before the United States justice should include six actions: the issuance of a warrant to the US Government so that the justice of the state of Florida dispatches the appeals of resentence that it has unjustifiably delayed.
The Request to the United States Government to order the Florida courts to set a definitive date for the resentencing hearing; the Requirement to the Government of the United States to comply with the recommendations of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (CDIH), among which are his release.
Besides, the demand for the US justice system to guarantee the rights to human dignity of Serrano in security, and medical and timely care, in prison; the ratification of Ecuador’s position on the kidnapping of Nelson Serrano, as well as the serious violations of his human rights committed.
Finally, They ask that it be expressly stated that the sovereignty of the country was violated, and that Serrano’s human rights were attacked, such as freedom, justice and due process; Therefore, as a measure of reparation, the return to Ecuador must be requested to “legally follow a trial.”
After nearly twenty years of Serrano’s arrest in Ecuador and his transfer to a jail in the United States, his defense insists that this act was illegal and that the judicial process had many irregularities. (I)
