Awaited benefit blocked in the Sejm. Seniors will lose a chance for PLN 7,600?

Many seniors do not have an easy financial situation, and when their spouse dies, they lose another source of income. This is why widows and widowers can claim a survivor’s pension. However, the benefit in its current structure is not enough, which is why the Left submitted its own draft to the Sejm.

A survivor’s pension, called a widow’s pension, is a benefit that is payable after the death of a family member. In most cases, however, it is used by widows and widowers. However, the benefit in its current dimension is not a sufficient form of support in the face of the loss of a loved one, and with it a source of income for the household budget. For this reason, the Left worked for change. What are their assumptions and will the money finally go to needy widows and widowers?

Who is entitled to a widow’s pension and how much is it? The current benefit is not enough

Currently, widows and widowers can choose between two options. In the event of the death of a spouse, they have the option of staying on while collecting their pension or opting for . They then have to give up their benefit entirely and will only receive 85% of the deceased’s pension. According to the Left, the widow’s pension in such an extent is not sufficient support, which is why it was decided to start work on a new project. What stage is it at?

Changes in widows’ pensions. The project was blocked in the parliamentary committee

The Left decided to prepare changes in pensions that would improve the situation of 1.5 million widows and widowers. According to their project, a person after the death of a loved one would not have to decide on only one benefit. She could choose whether to draw her pension and add 50% of the deceased’s benefit to it, or receive only 50% of her own pension and increase it with the full survivor’s pension of her husband or wife. It is worth noting, however, that the sum of all these benefits will not be able to exceed three times the average pension, which currently would amount to PLN 7,600 per month.

Many widows and widowers, however, may be disappointed. Initially, the Left submitted the bill as an MP, but it got stuck in the parliamentary freezer. That is why further steps were taken and it was decided to present it as a civic project, under which over 200,000 signatures were collected. However, the situation repeats itself. – Unfortunately, the project on the introduction of widows’ pensions got stuck in the parliamentary committee, and the chairman of this committee, Urszula Rusecka, does not want to proceed with it and does not even want to talk about it – Arkadiusz Iwaniek in an interview with biznes.interia.pl. The Left MP also adds that, according to him, this is a “political calculation” resulting from the upcoming elections. In the conversation, he also added that the Left is open to talks, as long as the project sees the light of day. If nothing changes in this matter, widows and widowers will not receive additional support, and thus the PLN 7,600 pension will not appear on their accounts.
