What an extraordinary example of patriotism and courage the citizens of Ecuador gave by going to the polls en masse, despite the terrible state of insecurity that the country is currently going through. Overcoming fear and facing all kinds of potential dangers was a strong message to the bullies: our country is against them and wants to put an end to the threats and bloodshed that oppress the population and do not allow us to live in peace.
It is a message that transcends borders, because the drug trade that pushes us into insecurity is a transnational phenomenon that requires internationally coordinated measures between consumers, producers and transit countries. Bullies are trying to subjugate the country and the message is that we will not allow it. At this point we must be convinced that they will not defeat us if we stand up to them as a united people. We must be convinced that “if we don’t all get out, no one will get out” of this war.
The voter claim is also against the elites for their inability to reach consensus, dialogue on substantive issues and confront serious national and international problems through agreements that enable our unity. These attitudes demonstrate the inability of leaders to overcome their vested interests and their desire to cling to their positions of power, instead of seeking authentic solutions to the pressing problems of aberrant poverty, exclusion, hunger and inequality. We must create jobs and prosperity for all generations. When the poverty rate in rural areas is 50 percent and millions are condemned to malnutrition, urgent action is needed.
Another aspect that I have to highlight with optimism is the engagement of young people in these elections. The vast majority of analysts label young people as selfish, selfish, devoted to their own pleasure and completely lacking in commitment to their societies and states. Well, in these last elections, they showed the opposite. They voted by showing interest in the future, saying what they wanted and what they admired. This message also has to do with the need to overcome the shortcomings we have carried with us for centuries; We are a society that is more responsible towards the environment and other issues that guarantee the survival of humanity.
Another hopeful aspect is that a marked gender balance was evident in these elections. We have a long way to go before exploiting machismo and xenophobia, violence and patriarchal patterns, but it is an important start for women to have a leading position in the main spheres of public affairs.
Finally, the most important message is that the citizens of this country are interested and committed to the country’s success. These elections tell everyone that there are those of us who are convinced of a better future for Ecuador, for the sake of our children and grandchildren. You must be proud to be Ecuadorian and be part of those who first think of the Motherland! (OR)
