The increase in drone attacks on Russia is linked to Kyiv’s desire to demonstrate to the Ukrainian public that the Ukrainian Armed Forces can still strike back against the backdrop of a slow-moving counter-offensive. So say American officials, writes The New York Times.
The Armed Forces of Ukraine have not been able to break through the defense of Russia and are suffering heavy losses in equipment and troops. Having made no noticeable progress on the battlefield, Ukraine has stepped up its drone attacks, media reports. According to the publication, Ukraine uses drones produced on its territory.
The newspaper, referring to the words of Andriy Yusov, a representative of the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine, notes that Kyiv did not directly take responsibility for the attacks, but stated that attacks on Moscow would continue. In the United States, it is believed that if such tactics have a strategic goal, then it is to raise the morale of the population and troops. At the same time, Washington expects Ukraine to continue attacks, media writes.
Recently, Russian regions have been regularly attacked by drones. The other day, Ukraine tried to attack the territory of the Russian Federation with 42 aircraft-type drones – nine UAVs were shot down over Crimea, 33 were suppressed by electronic warfare, and a Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicle was intercepted in the Kaluga region. On the night of August 26, an aircraft-type drone was also shot down on approach to Moscow. There were no casualties, authorities in the metropolitan area said.
