U.S. and Ukrainian authorities have been debating behind-the-scenes for weeks over military strategies and tactics to revitalize the Ukrainian counteroffensive, writes The Wall Street Journal.

According to the publication, the US military is urging Ukrainians to concentrate their forces on attempts to break through Russian defenses in the south and move towards the Sea of Azov. Kiev has made some adjustments to its counteroffensive plans, but both sides are still unable to decide how to change the situation on the battlefield in the limited time remaining until winter, the note says.

“You don’t understand the nature of this conflict,” an unnamed U.S. official quoted Valery Zaluzhny, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in one of his conversations.

American officials believe that Ukraine is not too late to make progress, the newspaper writes. At the same time, the United States proceeds from the fact that the amount of military equipment already delivered is sufficient for a counteroffensive, and it is unlikely that it will be possible to provide the same amount of assistance again in 2024.

Kyiv also believes that there is still time, and Zaluzhny has told US officials that the Ukrainian army is “on the verge of a breakthrough,” the newspaper notes.
