In Manchester Crown Court, Judge Goss has sentenced 33-year-old nurse Lucy Letby to 14 life terms without the right to parole or pardon, whom a jury found guilty of killing seven newborns and attempting to kill six more, reports Sky News.
The verdict means that Letby will die in prison unless something extraordinary happens.
The judge called the nurse’s actions “cruel, calculating, cynical and bordering on sadism.”
Letby refused to listen to the verdict and asked to be taken away from the courtroom. According to the Daily Mail, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called the refusal “cowardice” and said the government was considering changing the law so that defendants would be required to be present in court for sentencing and forced to look victims in the eyes.
According to investigators, Letby committed all the crimes within 13 months while working in the neonatology department of the hospital. The investigation alleged that she injected the infants with air or insulin into a vein, or injected air or excess milk into their stomach through a nasal gastroscope. The parents of the surviving children told the court that the assassination attempt had left incurable consequences for their health.
Letby was suspended from work when the hospital noticed that infant mortality had risen excessively, and it turned out that many cases of a sharp deterioration in the condition of children coincided with the duty of this nurse.
The defendant pleaded not guilty. Letby’s defense pointed out that her guilt had not been proven in any case. The prosecution and the court objected that the nurse “carefully concealed her manipulations.” The trial has been ongoing since October 2022, with the jury deliberating the verdict for 22 days.
