During the hostilities, environmental activists have identified more than 900 cases of death of dolphins in the Black Sea, bodies were found on the shores of Ukraine, Turkey and Bulgaria. According to The New York Times, this was announced by the Ukrainian Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Ruslan Strelets.
In just one week in July, the bodies of ten dolphins were discovered and are being studied to determine the cause of death. Sagittarius called the trend “a new wartime challenge.”
The publication notes that dolphins were dying before the destruction of the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station. But after that, the flood waters contained heavy metals, pesticides, phosphorus and nitrogen, which accumulated in sediments behind the dam. Their entry into the Black Sea has resulted in massive algal blooms that can be toxic.
In addition, scientists believe that the sonar used by warships interferes with the dolphins’ orientation, as animals use echolocation in a similar way, the newspaper writes.
The Ukrainian animal protection organization UAnimals estimates the death toll of Black Sea dolphins at 50,000 in the first year of full-scale hostilities alone.
